THE NINTH ANNUAL STEP OUTDOORS TRYATHLON AND 5K TRAIL RUN/WALK IS SATURDAY, SEPT. 17, AT 10 A.M. AT HILLS CREEK STATE PARK, 111 SPILLWAY ROAD, SEVEN MILES NORTHEAST OF WELLSBORO. THERE ARE NO COMPETITIVE CATEGORIES IN THE TRIATHLON OR 5K. EVERY FINISHER WILL RECEIVE A MEDALLION. THOSE WHO PRE-REGISTER BY THIS COMING WEDNESDAY, AUG. 31 WILL BE GUARANTEED A FREE EVENT T-SHIRT. ANY SURPLUS T-SHIRTS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE ON RACE DAY. CHECK-IN TIME AND REGISTRATION ARE FROM 8-9:30 A.M. ON SEPT. 17 AT THE TENT BETWEEN THE PARK’S BATHHOUSE AND CONCESSION STAND. THE PRE-RACE TALK FOR ALL ENTRANTS, ESPECIALLY THOSE PARTICIPATING FOR THE FIRST TIME, WILL BE AT 9:45 A.M.

IN KEEPING WITH WELLSBORO'S FIRST FRIDAY THEME “THE ART OF WINE,” THERE WILL BE A FREE WINE TASTING AND FREE WINE FOR ADULTS ALONG WITH FREE ART, MUSIC AND FUN THINGS TO DO FOR ALL AGES AS WELL AS SUPER SALES AND RAFFLES THIS FRIDAY, SEPT. 2 FROM 5-8 P.M., RAIN OR SHINE. THE FIRST FRIDAY DOWNTOWN SIDEWALK SALE IS NEW WITH MANY BUSINESSES OFFERING SALE ITEMS OUTDOORS, INDOORS OR BOTH AND SOME ALSO HOLDING RAFFLES WITH A CHANCE TO WIN A GIFT CERTIFICATE FOR MERCHANDISE IN THAT STORE OR OTHER PRIZES.

THE ART OF QUILTING IS BEING CELEBRATED WITH A SEPTEMBER EXHIBIT BY THE MOUNTAIN LAUREL QUILT GUILD  AT THE GMEINER ART AND CULTURAL CENTER, 134 MAIN STREET, WELLSBORO.  THE EXHIBIT WILL OPEN FRIDAY, SEPT. 2 WITH A GALA RECEPTION FEATURING HORS D’OEUVRES AND SWEETS FROM 7 TO 9 P.M. AT THE GMEINER. THE GALLERY WILL BE ALIVE WITH 111 QUILTS MADE BY 48 GUILD MEMBERS IN A WIDE VARIETY OF STYLES, COLORS AND SIZES. APPLIQUÉ AND TRADITIONALLY PIECED AND PAPER-PIECED QUILTS WILL BE REPRESENTED, AS WILL METICULOUS HAND QUILTING AND ORIGINAL MACHINE QUILTING.

RAY CORSE, 68, OF SULLIVAN TOWNSHIP HAS BEEN PLAYING THE ACCORDION FOR 63 YEARS. TUESDAY, SEPT. 6 AT 1 P.M., HE WILL PLAY AND SING DURING THE GOLDEN AFTERNOONS PROGRAM AT THE DEANE CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS AT 104 MAIN STREET IN WELLSBORO. REFRESHMENTS WILL BE PROVIDED. THE PROGRAM IS FREE AND OPEN TO THOSE 55 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 9, THE FOUR BANDSMEN WILL BE ON STAGE AT THE WAREHOUSE THEATRE, 3 CENTRAL AVENUE, WELLSBORO TO PERFORM SONGS WRITTEN AND PLAYED BY "THE BAND," INCLUDING THEIR THREE BIGGEST HITS - "WEIGHT (1968)," "UP ON CRIPPLE CREEK (1969)" AND "THE NIGHT THEY DROVE OL' DIXIE DOWN (1969)."

THE SATURDAY, SEPT. 10 LAUREL CLASSIC MOUNTAIN BIKE CHALLENGE IS KNOWN BY RIDERS FOR ITS AMAZING MIX OF GRINDING CLIMBS, SMOOTH SINGLE AND DOUBLE TRACK, CREEK AND LOG CROSSINGS AND FAST TECHNICAL DESCENTS ON TRAILS AND FORESTRY ROADS IN THE ASAPH SECTION OF THE TIOGA STATE FOREST.
$30 TO ENTER AND CAN PURCHASE AN EVENT T-SHIRT FOR $15 WHILE SUPPLIES LAST AND PAY IN CASH OR BY CHECK MADE PAYABLE TO THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE LAUREL FESTIVAL. CREDIT CARDS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED ON RACE DAY. THE START OF THE 11-MILE COURSE FOR BEGINNERS WILL BE AT 10 A.M. THE START OF THE 22-MILE COURSE FOR EXPERT, SPORT AND SINGLE SPEED ENTRANTS WILL BE 11 A.M.

THE SOUTH CREEK LIONS CLUB WILL BE HAVING A ROAST BEEF & HAM DINNER ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10TH AT THE LIONS HALL ON ROUTE 14 IN GILLETT. DOORS WILL OPEN AT 4:30PM. THE MENU INCLUDES HOMEMADE MASHED POTATOES, VEGETABLES, BAKED BEANS, COLE SLAW AND HOME BAKED BREAD. COST IS $10.00 PER PERSON WHICH SUPPORTS THE LIONS ACTIVITIES IN THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE REMEMBER DINNERS ALSO ON OCTOBER 8TH AND NOVEMBER 12TH.

AT 10 A.M. SATURDAY MORNING, SEPT. 10, THE FREE DEANE LITTLE BEANS PROGRAM FEATURING JULIE SCHLOSSER AND ELIZABETH CARRAS WILL BE IN THE LOBBY AT THE DEANE CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS AT 104 MAIN STREET IN WELLSBORO. CHILDREN AGES 10 AND YOUNGER AND THEIR FAMILIES ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN HANDS-ON MUSICAL EXPERIENCES. SNACKS WILL BE PROVIDED FREE.  DURING THE PROGRAM, SCHLOSSER AND CARRAS WILL PLAY GUITAR AND INVITE CHILDREN TO SING SONGS AND MOVE TO THE MUSIC. THEY WILL HAVE A SELECTION OF PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS FOR THE CHILDREN TO PLAY, SUCH AS MARACAS, JINGLE BELLS, SAND BLOCKS AND A MIX OF DIFFERENT SMALL DRUMS AND WILL BRING MATERIALS SO THE YOUNGSTERS CAN MAKE AN INSTRUMENT TO TAKE HOME.

HAMILTON-GIBSON PRODUCTIONS IS HOLDING OPEN AUDITIONS FOR "THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW," A RADIO PLAY-STYLED PERFORMANCE OF THE CLASSIC TALE BY WASHINGTON IRVING.  FOR THIS SCRIPTED RADIO PLAY, THE WAREHOUSE THEATRE AT 3 CENTRAL AVENUE IN WELLSBORO WILL BE TRANSFORMED INTO THE WBFR RADIO STUDIO. USING ONLY VOICES, MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS, THE CAST OF 12 PERFORMERS WILL CREATE THE TINY HAMLET OF SLEEPY HOLLOW IN THE YEAR 1789, A RUSTIC TOWN BOUND BY TRADITIONS, LEERY OF STRANGERS, AND HAUNTED BY TALES OF GHOSTS. GABE HAKVAAG WILL DIRECT. PERFORMERS WILL BE READING FROM THE SCRIPT IN FRONT OF A MICROPHONE. ALTHOUGH THERE IS NO MEMORIZATION, PERFORMERS NEED TO BE ABLE TO READ CLEARLY AND IN CHARACTER. MALE AND FEMALE PERFORMERS ARE NEEDED; ALL AGES ARE INVITED TO AUDITION. THE ABILITY TO PERFORM ACCENTS AND A VARIETY OF “VOICES” IS A PLUS, BUT NOT REQUIRED. ACTORS WILL ALSO LEARN TO PERFORM SOUND EFFECTS USING SPECIAL PROPS AND DEVICES. AUDITIONS WILL BE AT THE HAMILTON-GIBSON OFFICE AT 29 WATER STREET IN WELLSBORO ON FRIDAY, SEPT. 9 FROM 6:30-8 P.M., SATURDAY, SEPT. 10 FROM 2-4 P.M. AND SUNDAY, SEPT. 11 FROM 6-8 P.M.
